Joseph's family were German Catholics.
He had a brother John who may have died from smallpox.
His sister's Rose, Agnes, Theresa, Appolonia married Masterson.Her obituary was in a paper Nesconset, New York 1040-1943.
He had an Uncle in the city in Germany who taught him the tailor trade and who he lived with.
* He repaired repaired clothes for a whaling Captain in Sag Harbor, New York. The Captain had an uncle in Riverhead, New York by the name of John T Perkins. He was the owner of the Henry Perkins Hotel in Riverhead, New York. This is how he came to work for the hotel as a tailor.
He stayed in Germany until his mother died.
It was thought he was married before and had a son Charles and a daughter.
